Rope Drop 101: Disneyland

When you are not naturally athletically talented, you pick up a competitive edge in things like charades, Lightning Lane strategies, or becoming the queen of rope drop.

Okay, so there is no official crowning of the rope drop queen, but I play it like there is.

My competitive spirit and lack of athletic ability bring you everything you need to know to master rope drop at Disneyland.

But first, what is rope drop?

Rope drop is simply being inside the park before the official opening time and waiting near the entrance to the land you want to visit first. When the park officially opens, the ropes come down and you are already in position to head straight to your first rides

Why is rope drop so amazing?

When the crowds disperse, and fair warning, there WILL be crowds gathered at the ropes before official park opening, you can suddenly feel like you have the park to yourself. You get clear walkways, rides with little to no wait, cooler weather, and my personal favorite: the feeling of having the entire Disney day ahead of you.

To master rope drop, you have to work backwards.

We want to be scanning into the park around 7:30 a.m., which means going through security around 7:00 a.m. Figure out how long it takes to get from your hotel to security and work backwards from there.

Once you are inside, head toward the land you want to start in and line up at the rope until the park officially opens, typically at 8:00 a.m.

If you have Lightning Lane Multi Pass, this is also when you should book your first Lightning Lane. You can make your first selection as soon as you enter the park and then book another once you redeem it or two hours after making your selection.

So where should you go?

That depends on who you are traveling with, your priorities and whether you have Lightning Lane. Here are a few ways I would do it.

Fantasyland Rope Drop Strategy

For younger kids or first-timers

Line up in Central Plaza near the Partners statue for Fantasyland.

When the rope drops:

  1. Dumbo
  2. Casey Jr. Circus Train
  3. King Arthur Carrousel
  4. Continue through your highest-priority Fantasyland rides while waits are low

I especially like starting first-time riders with attractions they can see almost entirely from the outside. It gives them a chance to get their feet wet with the idea of rides before jumping into something dark or unfamiliar.

Meanwhile, if you have Lightning Lane Multi Pass:

7:30 a.m. — Book Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway and modify it for later when you can

9:30 a.m. — Book Roger Rabbit and modify it for later

11:30 a.m. —Book “it’s a small world”

Now you can spend your morning enjoying Fantasyland while it is quieter and have Lightning Lanes waiting for you in Toontown and Fantasyland once the crowds start building.

Frontierland Rope Drop Strategy

For a mixed-age group

Line up at the Frontierland rope.

When the rope drops:

  1. Big Thunder Mountain
  2. Indiana Jones
  3. Pirates of the Caribbean

This gives you a good mix of attractions without bouncing all over the park.

Meanwhile, if you have Lightning Lane Multi Pass:

7:30 a.m. — Book Space Mountain and modify it for later when you can

9:30 a.m. — Book Matterhorn and modify it for later

11:30 a.m. — Book Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway

You can spend your morning working through the left side of the park and then head toward Tomorrowland and Toontown later with Lightning Lanes already lined up.

Tomorrowland Rope Drop Strategy

For thrill seekers

Line up at the Tomorrowland rope.

When the rope drops:

  1. Space Mountain
  2. Matterhorn
  3. Indiana Jones

Meanwhile, if you have Lightning Lane Multi Pass:

7:30 a.m. — Book Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and modify it for later when you can

9:30 a.m. — Book Haunted Mansion

11:30 a.m. — Book Big Thunder Mountain

You are using those low morning standby waits to knock out Space Mountain and Matterhorn before making your way across the park, while also setting yourself up with Lightning Lanes on the left side for later.

One important thing to remember: these are examples, not rules. Ride availability, wait times and Lightning Lane return times can change every day.

The strategy stays the same.

Choose an area. Work your way through it while the park is still calm. Enjoy those quiet morning hours instead of crisscrossing Disneyland chasing wait times, and use Lightning Lane to set yourself up for where you want to go next.

Rope drop requires an early alarm, but those first couple of hours can completely change the feel of your day.
And who knows, maybe you’ll earn your own imaginary rope drop crown.
